Having a Why

Updated: May 11, 2020

The Key to Accomplishment is Backing a Goal with Power

Having a reason for striving is as meaningful as the striving itself.

When I wake up in the morning, I have a reason to get out of bed and get dressed for work: I want to eat. Sure I've chosen a career that I appreciate and work for a company I admire, but if I didn't need to eat and pay bills then I would spend more of my time away from the office. I have a motivating factor that drives my daily action to go into work.

Your goals should be backed with the same type of motivating factor. It's what will drive you to push ahead when the times get tough. It's what will inspire you to think creativity as you design your journey to the goal's finish line.

For my biking goal of riding across Florida, I'm imagining the wonderful feeling of accomplishment that will stay by my side for months after the bike ride. I'm looking forward to being in fantastic shape. I can't wait to see my old biking friends when we reunite for the ride. And I want to have my story shared in my company's newsletter.

When I wrote down my goal of biking across Florida, I also took time to write down my reasons for wanting to do so. I play these reasons over and over in my mind, revisiting them in my journal on a regular basis. In return, I've found that my reasons help me get on the bike everyday.

If you know the why, you can live any how. - Friedrich Nietzche, German Philosopher
